Women and non-binary individuals bring unique skills and perspectives that are invaluable in technical professions. Creativity, analytical thinking, teamwork and communication skills are just some of the qualities that make them successful professionals in technology. By bringing their talents to tech jobs, they can develop innovative solutions and make a positive change in the industry.
The myth of the male-dominated tech industry
It is unfortunate that the tech industry is still perceived as a male-dominated industry. This myth has caused many women and non-binary individuals to stay away from tech careers. However, it is important to recognize that this myth is not the reality. More and more companies and organizations are embracing diversity and equality in the workplace and recognizing the value of female and non-binary professionals in the tech industry. Women and non-binary individuals have the opportunity to overcome these biases and take their place in the tech world.
The advantages of a career in web development
Web development is a multifaceted field of work with numerous advantages for women and non-binary people. It encompasses a wide range of tasks and allows for individual development opportunities. For example, the field of web development includes front-end development, where the visual appearance and user-friendliness of websites are designed. Back-end development, on the other hand, deals with programming and data processing to ensure the functionality of websites. Other areas of responsibility may include database design, website security, search engine optimization (SEO) and the integration of e-commerce functions. Not only men, but also women and non-binary people have the opportunity to contribute their individual strengths and interests in these fields of work and to continuously develop themselves further.
Challenges and potential concerns
It’s understandable that women and non-binary people might have concerns, especially when it comes to potential gaps in their knowledge of math. For once, I’ll speak from my own experience: for example, I never brought home good grades in the science subjects—math, physics, or chemistry—during my school years. I was only good at math when I really sat down, studied, and practiced. But because math and related subjects always put me off, I didn’t really feel like doing that. So I got bad grades, and the teachers in those subjects probably thought I was a little slow—and I doubted myself, too.
In my opinion, it is therefore important to emphasize that web development is primarily based on Analytical and logical thinking, creativity, spatial thinking skills and organizational skills While a basic understanding of mathematics can be an advantage, it is not strictly necessary in web development. It is possible to specialize in specific aspects of web development—such as front-end design—and focus on visual design and user experience. It’s important to recognize and leverage your own skills to solve problems analytically, logically, organizationally, and with a high degree of creativity. Even those who want to get into working with databases don’t need any mathematical knowledge! What’s always important is the ability to develop solutions independently, to think analytically and logically, and to „mentally visualize theoretical concepts in three dimensions“—in other words, to think spatially. Google explains what this means in numerous search results.
Support and further training opportunities
To overcome potential knowledge gaps and develop further, there are numerous support and training opportunities available. Coding bootcamps, online courses, tutorials and mentoring programs are great resources to build coding knowledge and learn specific web development skills. In addition, networks and communities provide a supportive community where women and non-binary people can inspire, support and learn from each other.
The courage to take on new challenges
The most important aspect of deciding to pursue a career in web development is having the courage to take on new challenges. Women and non-binary individuals should not be deterred by potential concerns and knowledge gaps, but should find the courage to pursue their passions and interests. With determination, perseverance and the right support, they can continuously improve their skills and build a successful career in the tech industry.
The path to technical careers (e.g. web developer, full stack web developer, front end web developer, UX designer, database developer, and many more) can be both exciting and challenging. I encourage all women and non-binary individuals to develop their talents and passions in this field. Believe in yourself, boldly set goals and take on new challenges. After more than 14 years of experience in developing for and with WordPress-based tasks, I too am constantly faced with new, unprecedented problems in almost every project. I have to work my way in and keep learning.
A particularly exciting and inclusive event will take place from October 19 to 21, 2023: WordCamp Germany in Gerolstein.
A WordCamp is an event dedicated to the WordPress community and covers a variety of topics related to web development, design and digital marketing. Here you have the opportunity to meet inspiring people, expand your knowledge, attend workshops and talks and get a taste of the world of WordPress; the CMS I work with on a daily basis. It's a great way to build your network and further your education.
Together, we can make the tech industry more diverse and inclusive. Good luck on your journey and let's shape the future of technology together!
Sincerely
Saskia Teichmann
